Why I Created The Crew CAP

Superyacht anchored off the coats of Mallorca

My name is James McDonagh.

Twenty-three years ago, I flew out to Mallorca as a junior crew member with no idea where the journey would take me. I started dockwalking, handing out my CV, trying to meet new people and signing up with crew agencies.

Eventually, I found some temp work, did three deliveries and then secured my first permanent position in the Seychelles!! Over the years, I progressed through the ranks to become a Superyacht Captain, leading teams, interviewing crew, promoting crew, rejecting crew and building departments on yachts around the world.

Throughout my career, I noticed something that never changed. Many talented crew struggled to progress, not because they lacked ability, but because they lacked guidance. They were making avoidable mistakes, receiving conflicting advice and had nobody experienced to turn to.

Time and again I watched hardworking crew miss opportunities because of small, avoidable mistakes. Poor CVs, weak interview preparation, unrealistic expectations or simply not understanding what Captains were looking for.

I realised that a small amount of honest, practical guidance at the right time could completely change someone's career.

I created The Crew CAP to become the mentor I wish more crew had access to when I was building my career.

Today I live in Mallorca, where my own yachting journey began 23 years ago. Although I’m no longer serving onboard, I remain closely connected to the industry. My work keeps me in regular contact with Captains and Yacht Crew, giving me valuable insight into what employers are looking for and the challenges that crew face at every stage of their careers

Why The Crew CAP Exists

The Crew CAP was created to give yacht crew the guidance I wish more people had access to when I was progressing through my own career.
